I never said that he was right about everything, only that I agree with the general picture it paints. But I think you are somewhat underestimating the belief in Communism. There were many who actually believed in it (at least pre-WW2). And they did build a political base that allowed the Russians in.

> the real reason for the fight is that the collapse of the Soviet Union caused a power vacuum

I disagree. Power vacuum by itself is insufficient reason for civil war. There are many countries in the world who have experienced massive power vacuums in the aftermath of revolutions and did not disintegrate the way Soviet Union did (and still does).

> Capitalism and democracy are naturally related

Yes they are. And the article conceded that. But the correlation is weak. Capitalism will only provide you with enough freedom to guarantee a good consumer market exists. Beyond that freedom gets in the way.

Here is a simple example. I know of many people who make a lot of money (ok for a poor person like me $400,000+ family income is a lot). They would be happy to be working only a third of that time with a proportional decrease in their income. But that freedom is not available in our society (not easily anyway). The reason is that it gets in the way of raw capitalism.
