I remember hearing an anecdote (possibly apocryphal) about Charles de Gaulle when he visited Algeria in the late 1950's. There was a huge crowd of French ex-pats demanding that the French stay and run the government, not turn it over to the locals. DeGaulle got the crowd to calm down and then said, "I have heard you." Wild applause from the crowd. Six months later the French government handed over the reins to the locals.
