I agree with everything you said. What is missing from your position, is an acknowledgement that pretty much everything you said about the Soviets was also true about the regimes we supported in opposing them. You cannot say it was wrong of them to make people disappear and at the same time say it was ok for us to install proxies that did the same things because we were fighting the soviets.
