You are trying to put the larger picture under a microscope. Nothing can stand that much scrutiny, including either one of our pasts, I'm betting. During this time when the world is questioning our motives in Iraq, I think its important to stick as close to the truth as possible. If, at least almost, everyone doesn't want live like we do, why are they doing anything to get in here by hook, or by crook?? Those people who are most like us are trying to get here. That does not mean everyone is trying to move here nor wants to live hear just as everyone doesn't have our values and priorities. We Americans tend to be ego centric and think the moon and the Sun and the planets revolve around us. We are important but not that important. A number in the world are drawn to us but nowhere near everyone. Personally, I don't like the urbanization of this country, or any other, at the expense of the ecology, and native fauna, and flora, but the majority of Americans seem to think that such progress is the only way to go. Many Americans don't know any better. If you live in a city that has no center and is mostly sprawl[and that describes a majority of American cities] and you live there your entire life, you won't ever know that cities don't have to sprawl; that cities can have strong downtowns; that all the people don't want to live only in the 'burbs. When all the trees are gone, and they die from carbon dioxide poisoning, they may wish they had chosen to maintain enough wilderness to sustain all kind of life. The point being, everybody cannot have it the way they want, so they must adapt to survive. Yes, we need to adapt but to what degree......obesity, depression and asthma are becoming chronic problems in this country. Many MDs now believe that those conditions as well as many others like diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines etc are caused by stress from living in a society as complex as ours. We may be reaching our limit to adapt.
