Although the station purports to be the voice of "free" Islam or whatever, in fact, I have never understood who or what the station actually represents. As you know, it is situated on Qatar, which is strongly predisposed to the US, in fact, Doha its capital, has the second largest concentration of US forces in the MidEast, after Kuwait (and excluding Iraq, of course). Perhaps you were unaware that the station used to relay BBC TV in the Persian Gulf and has continued to enjoy that association. While covertly being very much pro-US, pro-Israel and pro-UK, it makes many provocative statements about various subjects in order to pretend that it is not a Western puppet. In fact, I began to suspect its credentials when Al Jazeera was the only TV station in the region which received (from where? Hollywood?) and transmitted the bin Laden tapes.
