My first guess would be to disable messenger service. This is not MSN Messenger so it will still let use instant meessaging if you choose. Here's how to disable it.

lantalk.net

"I tried rescanning with NAV and scanned with Panda's Online Active Scan and with TrendMicro's online scanner, but everything came out clean."

most security experts will tell you that anti-virus programs are real good at detecting viruses and worms and some trojans

but only anti-trojans are real good at detecting trojans. i recommend BOClean and TrojanHunter(TH). the former has no try-it-before-you-buy-it offer, the latter does.

at the very least you should install TH, check for current updates, then run a full scan. you might find a few trojans.

why do i think that?

because of this...

"Guess it's time to install a firewall"

that is one scary sentence to read, marty.

also, TH has a few helpful tools like ProcessViewer (to let you see everything running) and NetStat Viewer (to show you open ports).
