I was just reading about the battle over affirmative action and Va. Tech. They had apparently banned and then reinstated affirmative action. What was interesting was the reason given for the reinstatement--that the language of the ban offended people.

<< "The board decided to rescind because the specific language seemed to upset so many people."

At Kilgore's urging, the Board of Visitors last month passed a resolution stating that the university "shall not discriminate against, grant preferences in favor of, or otherwise weigh or consider an applicant's disability, age, veteran status, political affiliation, race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religious belief or gender."

I believe I was commenting on the nature of democracy and the fact that it must reflect bias. I gave no opinion on whether the bias toward affirmative action was partly or wholly against particular principles. And as I have a lack of time to discuss such an issue right now...I will pass on an opinion.

I am well familiar with the amendment you quote. In fact, I have wondered more than once what the "privileges" reference is intended to compass. Does it follow then that there is no variation in either legal or natural privilege from State to State? For example, is the "pursuit of happiness" a privilege of a US citizen? If not...then perhaps you could list a handful of privileges, and we may confer as to whether they are equally honored across the States.
