not all of them were as extreme as Qutb or Khomeini. Most wanted something in between.

It is my impression that militant Islamic extremists don't want anything "in between". I made my way through parts of Sayyid Qutb's "Milestones". He is a good writer and a serious thinker, but his thinking is strictly religious - and totally free of "in betweens". He says that if believer walks one step with a 'heathen' (Qutb uses a different term), he himself becomes a heathen.

Qutb didn't have a single "compromising" cell in his body.
