And did you notice I put Qutb along with Khomeini as those who are too extreme and do cannot coexist? You are just repeating what I said. However, if you were to find readings of the other people I had named, you will see that there was plenty of room for compromise. Unfortunately I don't know where I can get you an English translation.

I just remembered something else to add. Ayatollah Khoi was a far greater figure than Khomeini. He outranked him by more than an order of magnitude. As you may recall from an article by Taheri that was put here a couple of days ago, while Khomeini claimed only good society can create good people, Khoi (pronounced kho-ee) believed that only good men could create good societies and he had the majority with him. It seems to me that fundamentally, one believed in the power of state while the other in the power of individual. As another example, albeit not along the same lines, Ayatollah Shariatmadari was asked about in-vitro fertilization. This way back in the early days of the technique when it was very controversial to some. Shariatmadari's answer was that so long as the parents are married he sees nothing wrong with it. From what I know about him, he would have been able to coexist quite easily. He too outranked Khomeini.

There are two things that you don't get to see. The first is that only the most extreme of the ideas make big stories so they are the only ones you get to hear about. The second is that this is not a new wave. It has been going on for at least 40-50 years. It did not was not this bad to begin with. In fighting them, we outdid ourselves very much the way that antibiotics give rise to mutant strains. I think this is something that is lost to many who just woke up to the process.
