MON,
Michael Ledeen is an extreme voice on the neocon side, sort of the offset to Dowd. Policy comes from the middle after filtering out the extreme voices. I dont think the US should become sparta but I dont think we should totally remove ourselves from the region either.
The desire to disarm post WW2 probably left several central european countries on the wrong side of the iron curtain. A desire to remove american power from the region too quickly may not allow the development of the iraqi democracy we are pushing as well as not deterring the states that Ledeen mentions. Mike

Michael,

The United States has written an exceptional page of military history in Iraq, but it can be undone by suicidal political blunders in the region in the very near future. It's time to bring down the other terror masters.

Faster, please.

Ledeen is one of my intellectual heroes. He is not advocating war, he is advocating against falling back into the Realist mode of propping up tyranical rules of rogue states that foster, fund and arm terrorist. He is 100% correct. He is also on the record, often, saying that Iraq should be the only shooting war. The rest are political and diplomatic wars.

We have incurred the pain of ripping the bandage of the wound, let's clean out the puss and spray a little antiseptic on before putting the bandage on again.

The national security goal is to undermine the Islamic terrorism as a valid source of political power. The fall of Iran's mullahs is crucial to that goal. If Saddam falling was a surprise to the Arab street, imagine the shocking brace of reality which will be caused by the fall of Iran.

Paul

but also the obvious rift that's forming within the administration itself between the State and Defense depts.

That rift has been there since the day the Defense Department was formed. You will see some major changes in what Iran and Syria do regarding Terrorists. That is part of the plan. No need to invade. They have to be afraid we will "Saddam" the leadership there in order to get them to change their ways. That is called "Diplomacy." :>)
