Iraq proved to be weaker than was thought at the beginning of the war.

Mainly a matter of morale and commitment. I think it was Napolean who said "the morale is to the physical as 10 is to 1". Its understandable that a lot of Iraqi's didn't care to fight a desperate battle against a superior force to try and protect a brutal thug.

Germans and Japanese fought hard in WWII but their regimes where more popular then Saddams and the odds didn't get as overwhelming until near the end. Also a lot of the Germans where fighting off the Red Army which would impose communism and Soviet empire, and also was prety tough on the civilians in the areas it conquered.
