You spoke in generalties about the US, I replied in generalities about China. If I find 1 American who doesn't fit your statement, is it falsified?

The nations are very new to each other and they don't understand each other well. My experience suggests that this remains at least somewhat the case when to nations speak different languages.

The fact that China believes that it must murder members of Falung Gong tells us in America how weak China really is.

Thanks for the great article on China
Traditonal greetings and warmth, of the Chinese nature, are in indeed missing in America except in families.
This can be a very cold place indeed for those who do not have connections or family.
An immigrant has to work at it to find a comparable set of friends or a welcome environment, but there is a vast varity available provided a person learns English, and if he doesn't he will have to seek solace in a community of
similar nationality, which is often the case.
The only Chinese family I know own restaurant, very classy, very Chinese fare. They speak English as well
as anyone around, but employ people from China who are just getting started in America. They got a loan, built a new restaurant with lion statues out front, and tripled the size. They will be as successful as they can dream with a bit more work.
This is the true melting pot, because they could do the same in nearly any city in the country and if they were ill treated in any manner we have the police or the courts or the attorneys who will at least try to resolve the problem and prevent harrassment.
The two things most important are to understand English as well a possible, and to learn from people who have been here for some time and who " know the ropes" (what works and what doesn't)
As far as an American "culture" I am not sure it could be defined.
My neighbor owns 900 acres and raises cows. He just retired from flying 757 airplanes after reaching 65, and goes to various pilot meetings.Got enough money to choke a horse- doesn't own one. Bored.
My niece, an excellent belly-dancer, lives in Whittier and owns and runs an auto body repair shop with 80 cars in work. Belongs to Elks club and discusses city affairs.
Attorney Dan lives in Calif, built a 3 story, $750 K house, spends 1/2 his time fishing in Cabo San Lucas
A local neighbor was wounded in the Vietnam war, jumping out of helicopters to rescue downed fliers in the jungles and has to work at construction for a living
I already mentioned the Chinese family
I challenge anyone to define "culture" that encompasses these diverse people
We do have traditions. like the IRS, Christmas, 4 th of July, football . or verbally trashing the Politicians

Thanks for posting the article, Yiwu.I would not argue with it, but I felt like I was reading a shrink's report of a paranoid patent.

All we can do is keep a firm Diplomatic face toward China, and wait for them to change. We will not change them.

In China nobody believes the Americans made a mistake bombing the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The common sentiment is that it was intentional - part of a plot. They believed president Bill Clinton was not part of this plot, nor was his administration, but somebody had bombed the embassy on purpose. The Chinese had long admired the Americans and their technology to the extent that they could not believe they were capable of making such a stupid mistake.

Is this really true ?

Because it doesn't make a shred of sense that we had anything whatsoever to gain by targeting the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, unless the writer implies by this that it was an isolated nutcase in the Army that did it. But then that doesn't reflect anything more about the US than Tim McVeigh and in any case contradicts the statement about "Americans" not making a mistake.

PS whatever happened with all those spy microphones in the airline China bought a while back ?

About a week ago, I was waiting for my kids to finish their painting class, a FLGer was giving his little speech to a teacher of the art school. According to him, the FLG protest in front of Zhong Nan Hai was a spontaneously act by the FLGers, they all went to there at the same time because of the power of the Gong, not because somebody planned it.

I also spilled my coffee.
