Or maybe most of those how opposed the US invasion were not doing so out of love for Saddam's regime.

Many were doing it out of hatred for Bush and/or the United States. I saw polls showing a significant percent of French and Russian citizens who said they wanted Saddam to win the war.

Perhaps, but you are missing the genius of Saddam, his uncanny ability to create situations that end up pitting people/countries against each other to further his own goals. People against the invasion unwittingly become supporters of the corrupt Iraqi regime, even if that is not their desire, that is the end result.
