The only way that his plan can be to his "liking" if things continue toward a Jihad, is if he is looking for the total annihilation of the Jihadis

That statement has more than a passing resemblance to arrogance and an overconfidence in one's military superiority - mistakes that led to the decline of quite a few empires.

I am not so sure that a war of religions would lead to the total annihilation of all Muslims who care to join the fight. Granted that the US has military superiority, the other side has religious fanaticism that breeds a disregard for their own lives, which is a powerful weapon indeed.

As someone who has lived most of her life in various places in the Middle East, I have come to know this fanaticism rather well, much to my chagrin. I would hope to avoid such a war of religions, if at all possible.

My view is that it does not really matter who will win in the end, so much as whether or not such a war is to our advantage.

I believe that he, along with much of the world, underestimated the U.S. I believe he thinks we are soft and that we don't have the stomach for what needs to be done to meet this threat.
This mistake has been made numerous times. We look soft and easy when we are fat and prosperous. But seriously pissing us off is a VERY bad thing to do. Just under that soft exterior lies iron resolve. The British have the same trait.

I'd like to suggest that zonder is hopeless. Neither smart enough not flexible enough to embrace your truths.
