Yes I agree and I don't think there can ever be any justification for this. I will fully support any measure that will improve their lives.

But the debate we had was not about how nice we had been to the natives. It was about civilization and colonization. The Maya, the Aztec, and the Inca built civilizations. Natives in Alaska and the northern states did not (as far as I know). So you can claim that we killed and destroyed them. But you can't really claim that we colonized them in the normal sense of the word.
