Yes, they are remarkable aren't they?

Bill, this generation of soldiers, like the greatest generation before them, is dedicated and determined to be the best. Where did they come from? I have a theory....

This incredible American military started its rise when Ronald Reagan spoke to a generation, renewed the spirit of American patriotism, and called them forth to join. He envisioned a 600 ship Navy, high-tech weapons, space based defense systems, and professionalism, which was second to none. He rallied the Pentagon, gave soldiers a huge raise, and stated matter-of-factly the evil empire would fall.

Soon thereafter, in the mid 80's, a quality revolution was taking shape in American business. And a crusty straight-talking statistician by the name of Edwards Deming was given the go-ahead to reshape leadership in the military from the top down. Leadership training was given to every member of the military. A common template and way of thinking was created. Many of his fourteen points were taken onboard and still permeate through the conscience of military decision-making. This transformation of thinking has moved the decision-making authority to the lowest levels of the chain of command. In war, lightening fast decisions need to be made constantly. The freedom the American soldier has to be creative and find solutions has never been greater.

I've tried to explain to those who don't know the military of today. It's not just about great weapons. Yes, we have great weapons, but, what we really have is a great organization. No military in history has operated both independently and synergistically before like this one.

And what should frighten terrorists the world over is it's only getting better.
