Edwards Deming

Edwards Deming was given the go-ahead to reshape leadership in the military from the top down. Leadership training was given to every member of the military. A common template and way of thinking was created. Many of his fourteen points were taken onboard and still permeated through the conscience of military decision making. This transformation of thinking, has moved the decision making authority to the lowest levels of the chain of command. In war, lightening fast decisions need to be made constantly. The freedom the american soldier has to be creative and find solutions has never been greater.

He isn't just a statistician though. (as you undoubtedly know, I'm just putting this in for those who might not know the background)

Q. What is the Deming Prize and how did it come about?

A. The annual Deming Prize(s) was established in 1950 and is wholly administered by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE). The Deming Prize Medal was designed by Mr. Yoji Yamawaki. The Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) instituted the annual Deming Prize(s) for contributions to quality and dependability of product

That was because quality control was at the top of the USA manufacturing agenda during WW2. The learnings were exported to Japan, they learnt it while corporate USA dumped it.

Nice to see it back in fashion:-)
