John . By 'good' do you simply mean obedient?

Sure, a "good" child is always one who does as he's told. To ingrain this in each and every one of us is a fundamental reason we all receive compulsory "education" --- and it's no accident that educational institutions are modeled on military academies.

Indeed. I have to mention, however, that "following orders" is the whole basis of society. If people do not obey instructions, society falls apart. Thus it's implicit from Milgram that "Holocaust behaviour" is part-and-parcel of any well-regulated and disciplined society.

The insight I gleaned, and it took me quite a long time to believe it, was that this behaviour is, in fact, in all of us. Consequently one has to consciously fight against the mores of society to be "free" and it follows that if one wishes to be "free" one must be prepared to pay the price of being an outcast from society. I'm sure you accept that what society is all about it to suppress the interests of the individual in favor of the collective. (Although, as we see with politics, the interests of the collective are manipulated so that they favor an individual and the more a politician can facilitate this, the better the politician he is.)
