There was sniper / pockets of resistance activity everywhere in the city while the looters HAD their days. The military was very focused on recovering POWs within the city. There was a lot going on. Are we suppose to tell a soldier to pay more attention to a bunch of shoplifters when, without 100% vigilance, he could take a well-placed bullet in the neck? Guard a museum when there is a possibility of finding a fellow GI alive (POW)? The city was not secure when these A$$holes were carrying away most of these treasured pieces. Actually, it is sad that the world may not recover a lot of these objects. Mothers and Fathers will never recover the life of their sons. Ask the families of the soldiers where they believe their son's / daughter's vigilance should have been focused. You and I were not there...this time. I was there last time. I know where my attention would have been. Jerry

The artifacts which were looted are thousands of years old, and have been passed from hand to hand countless times. They can't be sold to a legitimate collector without provenance. But there are always rich people on the fringes willing to buy. Even more so today than ever before. So they aren't seen again for a lifetime or two. What does that mean to an artifact 5,000 years old? These artifacts will outlast you and me and everybody we know and retain their beauty. The fear is that the thieves are amateurs and will panic and destroy the artifacts to keep from being found out. This does happen unfortunately.
