The Venus de Milo was bought from a peasant (in Milo) by the French Consul for about 5K$ (gold value) for personal use, some 150 years ago. But before his death, the guy donated her to the state, not the Greek one, of course.

She is still doing thousands of customers daily, most of them Americans, I don't know why, but it's the same in Florence.
