I did some searching for a solution to your problem and did find some shareware and freeware programs that work with IE in doing what you want....if the email you're trying to retrieve is web based. Since you are familiar with Netscape, you might try Mozilla as a browser alternative. I've been using it for a while and it's now my browser of choice. It has the capability you are looking for.

mozilla.org

great input on the topic of firewalls and DOS attacks.

as for connection being reset by peer, that message usually means that the site you are connected to has reset the connection and is usually caused by a high amount of traffic on the site, or may be caused by a server error as well. you mentioned, "my homepage which refreshes a couple of times an hour". you could try another homepage, or another refresh increment.

i don't know anything about outlook. its popularity is a double-edged sword, and it attracts too many virus writers for my comfort level.

"I also check "running tasks" and "startup programs" on my computer fairly regularly. It's a great way, if you don't have the time to get your computer scanned through symantec, or some other program, to see if there's something running that shouldn't be there. Call me over-protective, but I'm just not prepared to get another new hard drive and start from scratch."

btw, this comment, and others like it in your post, tell me that you are approaching security as a process rather than searching for one product that will do it. it's an example of what i have been mentioning here lately. very good.

"I'm told that there's also an excellent firewall at agnitum.com and a great cleaner at moosoft.com, but I haven't checked them out yet."

you're right, good programs. and there are many more like them, each with strong points and weak points and areas of personal preference. it might be a kick to start a series of posts wherein posters identify what security programs they have in place.

Let me correct an error in my previous post about Mozilla. You have to click on the mail notification button to get the notification of new mail. It is not automatically downloaded like I thought so it won't take care of your problem.

my bad :-(
