To: Patricia Meaney who wrote (33782 ) 4/15/2003 2:28:56 PM From: mr.mark Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 110614 BlackICE always used to be an inbound only intrusion detection system, if i am not mistaken. however i see on wilders.org that v3.5 offers outbound protection as well. you might want to look further into this, what version you have, etc."Then I found out that in order to share files with my other computer, the BlackIce needed to be disabled." what do you mean you found out? i don't have to disable zonealarm to share files or printers across my LAN. imo, something is wrong if you need to do that. sometimes i hear people say that they have to disable their firewall to allow a certain broadband connection to work. that is equally as wrong, imo. these are prime examples of when a firewall is needed, and turning them off is going the other way. it should be pointed out in all these discussions about routers serving as firewalls that only NAT (network address translation) routers have this capability. if your BI was an earlier version, perhaps it never was providing outbound detection. zonealarm is on the job all the time with all outbound traffic. i mentioned that i make most programs ask for permission. i do this because some nasties are written to appear as other "trusted" programs. so by making norton ask before i run a manual virus scan, for instance, and all at once, when i have *not* initiated a scan, i get an alert that norton wants to run a scan.... i have a pretty good idea that there is a problem. but to answer your question, "Is there another software that doesn't interfere with the file sharing?" , i would say yes, there are lots of firewalls that do that. at this time i can tell you that zonealarm does. others will have to provide details on other firewalls, or start checking them out yourself. the wilders.org link i posted is a great source, and there are usually forums for each product.
