With the exception of SW and a couple others, airlines have never made money. They are just too capital AND labor intensive

Then you lower the supply (some airlines go out of business) and the market clearing price increases. People pay a bit more for their tickets and the surviving airlines can make money.

Throughout history, the number of major airlines failures is phenominal. Braniff; Eastern; TWA

No more so then in many other industries. I think there have been about 100 American car companies, maybe more.
