I tend to agree with you; however, if "a few airlines go under" that will be a lot of jobs lost. I am not sure how well the economy could take that lose right now.

Its not a net loss. If you subsidize X you have to take away from Y. Its not new money. It either gets taxed away from individuals who will then spend or invest less, or it gets taxed away from companies who are using the resources more profitably, or it gets added to are growing deficit.

Also because you keep the week airlines around you weaken the strong ones and convince the industry in general that it can count on Uncle Sam when the going gets rough rather then having to make the hard choices itself.
