They accidently shot down the Iranian airliner because they thought they where under attack. I don't think they would have anticipated planes moving around off the coast of the US as a threat.

Also too many people on the American ship would have known. I don't think they could keep a lid on it.

Our military did admit shooting down an Iranian(?) airliner by accident a fairly long time ago

And we decorated someone with a medal for that act.
