To: Jacob Snyder who wrote (94005 ) 4/16/2003 9:10:46 PM From: KLP Respond to of 281500 The Americans I know, and believe me, I know many from every walk of life, as well as political belief, think a good deal differently than you, from your words. So please don't speak for other Americans, including me...just speak for yourself. I know one person who marched in an anti-war rally...She had a sign that said...No more war....also it said...Saddam must go. Of course, when she and I talked, she had no idea of how that would happen, after 12+ years of UN involvement and wishful thinking. But at least she admitted she just didn't want war, and that she didn't know how to stop Saddam from killing people. Re Museums and Human Life..... If the entire world had protested seriously about and to Saddam over the last 12 years, perhaps there would be over 1,000,000+++ more humans alive in Iraq than there are today. The same people who are getting exercised so badly about the museum treasures, are most likely the ones that did and said absolutely nothing about the loss of human lives by murder in Iraq. My family has supported museums and libraries our entire lives. We have been more than a little vocal about the lack of American History in public schools. Go check yourself with your nearest Grades 6 through 12, and see exactly how much American History they have in the curriculum. Find out when it changed. Go back to the 1950's, and then be prepared to see a noticeable difference in the 1970's to the present time. Ask yourself why. World history is another case as well. Check your own school districts and see what the situation is there, and ask why, and who makes the decisions on the curriculum. The priorities you stated are yours. They certainly aren't mine. We can all speak for ourselves. We are materialists, who value tangible things, things with market value, over culture and ideas. Also, we are a nation that thinks history is meaningless. Americans care about the present, and the future, not the past. Historical arguments bore us. Part of our national culture is the Belief that we can control the present and future, without regard to the past.
