Carter's weak posture with the Russians emboldened them to invade Afganistan. I believe we intentionally tried to coax the Russians into invading Afganistan, so as to weaken them by making them get entangled in a war. According to Carter's National Security Advisor.

Bend over and show your weak posterior to the Russians. What a crock. I supposed we'd have been better off with Joseph McCarthy of John Birch as president. JFK was one of the top three presidents of all time. He really inspired the people, all around the world. He made America truly great. He backed down Russia like no one else did too. Even Reagan was never threatened that way. JFK's only problem was the right-wing scheming to get him. and they did. Probably J Edgar Hoover playing a key role.
