That's really funny. Maybe you're too young to remember but I watched Carter on television say "The Russians lied to me" about their intention for invading Afganistan. I thought, you're the last one who should be surprised the Russians lied! You're the President. Carter was in over his head.

Just relying on memory, but I seem to recall that the Soviets had a puppet government in Afghanistan than was being attacked, and they went in to suppress the revolts.
