CNN, NY Times and LA Times are really very balanced. Safire in NY Times is conservative. Many conservatives on CNN in such shows as Capitol Gang and Crossfire.

Mark: I watch a good deal of the media, mostly MSNBC and Fox, and a little of the majors and CNN. I believe that this 'fantasy' of the left-wing media is an invention of talk radio and the Rush/Hannity crowd. Their definition of 'left wing media' is any media outlet that attempts to show both sides of a story, even if the other side is not popular to the audience.

The media should clearly separate news stories from opinion. When presenting 'news', it should not interject editorial slant or comment based on what they want the viewer/reader to believe. Showing both sides of a story is NOT an attempt to manipulate; rather, it is an attempt to allow the viewer to reach their own conclusion.

FOX News, and the right wing talk radio, are particularly brazen in their mixture of 'news' and opinion. FOX News anchors will regularly interject their own personal views while reporting the news. The jingoism of FOX is nauseating at times. The kicker has always been the 'fair and balanced'; guess the preceding 'NOT' couldn't fit on the screen (must be the letterbox version).

Also, typical of the right wing media is to lump the far left in with the mainstream left; for example, some of the really left Hollywood types. The equivalent is for Bush to always be mentioned with Falwell/Graham/Strom in the same sentence.

Misdirection has become a favorite game of the right wing media. They are getting very good at it. Someday, people will realize that they are being gamed by FOX et al, and see it as the WWF it really is.
