I see; the old 'two wrongs make it right' argument?

You can only deal with the injustice in front of you, not in the past or in some unknown place. If you want to start a bible study group or SIROTC here on SI, and someone harasses you, I'll stand up for you.

Apart from the "mainstream" media that has itself moved steadily to the left

You really think that the mainstream media has moved steadily to the left? I believe the opposite is true. I remember the media of my childhood as being a lot more confrontational with the powers that be and more lopsided with liberals. Today's media is concentrated in huge corporations like GE and News Corp. There are a lot more conservative voices in the mainstream media today than there were 30 years ago. There are many corporate and government scandals that are reported in the alternative leftwing press like The Nation and Mother Jones that never makes it into the mainstream media. In my view, the mainstream media has slowly moved to the center during my lifetime.

I offered you a chance to back your claim of a leftist media and you meekly declined.....still want to try? Re: Flag burning.....can you find a news story of a flag burning in this country in the last say, 5 years or so...or earlier if you like. Let's see how far back you have to go.....

I'm not sure how you responded to his post, Mark. He was saying that those who call opponents to the war anti-American traitors and anti-American for expressing their opinions are in themselves acting in an anti-American way. Which I think you'd agree with.

Perhaps a better response would have been to say that most of the accusations of that sort were intended to decry the lack of support for the country's actions/troops/President, rather than the mere expression of the ideas. In other words, those who flung the phrase 'traitor' mostly did so because they felt anyone who didn't support the war once it was declared were, ipso facto, acting against the good of the country, its troops and its leader.

That's a substantive issue for debate (ie. are citizens who disagree with and peacefully protest decisions of their leaders not merely helping to shape and direct public policy, as they should in a democratic society?)

Free speech of the sort both of you speak of is sanctioned and supported, within the bounds of reason (no hate crimes on either end of the spectrum, for example). It's only closed-minded individuals who attempt to suppress the expression of reasonable ideas.
