I know a lot too. What these IT people haven't yet figured out is that the high salaries that they received in the 1990s were a temporary situation. Those jobs aren't coming back, not to them. Large profits are at best a temporary aberration and they are self correcting. After having seen numerous boom and busts in my own business I can tell you that your worst year follows soon after your best. What happens as you hit that peak is that you show up on the bean counter's radar as a large line item to be done away with. There's always someone somewhere that is hungrier then you are. A lot of companies figured out all at once that the IT departments were not returning anything near what they were putting into them, that they'd become a sink hole of expense. That and a lot of the work to transfer what had traditionally been manual operations to computerized operation is done and now it is simply a matter of maintenance.
