Hard to believe but I believe we are now shown to be a lot smarter than the Japanese

Our system is much less rigid than their's and we can innovate and do what is necessary to stave off a disaster.

yes, combined with a 20% national savings rate as a buffer. I would be cautious in projecting that aspect of Japan's experience to the U.S. what with a U.S. national savings rate less than 4%.
