Granted, is was quite a while ago, but the bottom line was he failed to keep India united. I believe it's illustrative to note, India's Hindu population was unable to build enough bridges with Islam to live peacefully together, so they opted to divide the nation. From what I gather, perhaps a million people died in wars caused by an inability to find harmony among the different cultures. Unfortunately, both cultures are still struggling with this problem today.
