The "Messenger Service" has nothing to do with Microsoft Messenger.

The "Messenger Service" and "Alerter Service" are both used by programs such as battery back-ups to send shut-down messages and error messages. Bither service are more important in a networked environment where they are used to send alerts to the System Administrator warning of impending or actual system failures.
