Re: It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the US could establish military bases in Iraq.

Ed,

You need to learn more before posting. The Pentagon announced two days ago that it is establishing four permanent bases in Iraq. When I say permanent, I mean permanent. They will be there until we drain Iraq's entire petroleum reserve. Only then will we scale back. That will be decades from now.

Re: I doubt very much you will find anybody in those countries who believe the US have ever used, or will use, those bases to subjugate their country

Ed, you need to learn more. The U.S. military was tossed out of the Philipines a few years ago because they rightly felt that they were being subjugated by the U.S. military. If you took a vote on Okinawa in Japan, you'd find that 90% of the citizens there feel subjugated by an enemy occupying force. See Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" for discussion.

You are really light on the facts, man.

Re: I believe the best chance for Iraqi unity and freedom is to create a democracy where the many diverse ethnic groups can participate

Not only are you light on the facts, you are hopelessly naive. Name one country where the U.S. has introduced democracy in the past 40 years. You can't. Because they don't exist. We always create puppet regimes, like the Unocal consultant from Maryland that we put in charge of Afghanistan. There is no democracy in Afghanistan, and there won't be in Iraq. Get over the middle school cheerleading for how noble the U.S. is in establishing democracies. That's a myth we don't have to believe here in reality.
