President General Pervez Musharraf ....

Responding to a query about Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s offer for a dialogue on the Kashmir issue, he said Pakistani Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali had responded to the statement. “I support the steps taken by the prime minister on this issue.”

Asked about Pakistan’s role in Iraq, he said, “The UN has indicated that it might call our troops to Iraq for peacekeeping. Lets see when they call for it.” He said Pakistan would extend all the support it could to the people of Iraq.

He said it was wrong to say Pakistan would be the next target of the US military. “Those who say so should be ashamed of themselves. We are a powerful nation of geo-political significance in the region.” He said Pakistan’s turn would never come. He said Pakistan was playing a pivotal role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and its exports to the country were 250 million dollars.

APP adds: Earlier, addressing the inaugural session of the International Iqbal Conference at Aiwan-e-Iqbal, President Musharraf said the geo-strategic changes in the 21st century warranted greater unity among Pakistanis.

He also called upon the Muslim Ummah to unite in order to cope with the challenges facing the world.

Referring to statements by certain religious leaders, President Musharraf said no war was going on between Islam and “infidels” in Pakistan. “These forces are trying to restrict the meaning and scope of Islam and its concepts,” he added.

“If there is a war going on at all, it is between the forces of truth and falsehood,” the president said.
