I've seen shows about guide dogs on Animal Planet. It must be painful to give up those dogs, having raised them from puppies. I've fostered lots and lots of rescue cats over the years and it's hard to let some of them go, too, but you do it because it needs to be done. And it's possible because you have control over who adopts the animal. You don't like them, adoption is off. What's important is that they have a good home. I get Christmas cards and pictures from some of them. This particular cat is with me because it was arranged by one of my fosters, one of my favorites. She called and begged me to take it for "two weeks." That was three weeks ago.

It's hard to find someone to take care of a pet for an extended period. People who like animals usually already have a settled household full of them. And my two closest friends--one of them absolutely hates cats and the other is allergic--wouldn't you know. Despite that, they're terrific friends, though...
