Maurice -- "One thing I don't know is what proportion of the deaths are in people under age 50 or 60"

I'm a layman and know only what I read and am able to absorb with my limited intellect. My sister, OTOH, is a brilliant chief of biolab services at the VA hospital here. We were talking about SARS this weekend (mostly I was curious if its had any impact WRT to procedures at the VA). At any rate, the thing she said that struck her the most and worried her the most, was that unlike most viral infections which traditionally mostly impact the very young or elderly, this one seems to be having a major impact on the very age group you are referring to.

Again, strictly anecdotal comment but it sure seemed to worry the heck out of her.

Marburg virus kills 25%, Ebola up to 90%.
Mortality isn't the most important variable.
4000 people have caught this--most in China.
If this were the flu, a million people would
have had it by now.

It seems to me that if China contains this in
the next few weeks, SARS is over. Additional
outbreaks will be quickly identified and
contained.

Every thread should have an optimist.

Now, if the Chinese count leaps suddenly,
to tens of thousands, then I will be worried.
