There are two things the Taliban did, they outlawed opium farming and failed to approve an oil pipeline. Heroine revenue may or may not have been the primary motive behind the UK stance on Afghanistan, but it's a little hard to explain why a war that resulted in an immediate increase in heroine production was something the UK considered a priority. Since there was a large benefit to the drug cartels, it seems reasonable to assume they would show their proper appreciation to those responsible for turning on the heroine taps.
