It is unclear whether US will be able to prevent a theocracy

I agree. This is one of the main reasons why I opposed the invasion of Iraq - that the US may not be install democracy in the country.

It is very difficult to change the mindsets of people with feudal traditions. Iraq is one such place, like most of the Middle East. They are used to consensus building among feudal leaders rather than a 30% majority party ruling the country. We do not care much for that system but it is theirs. I do not think the US is aware of how difficult the transition to democracy will be.

In that event, hypothetically, I would think the rest of the world may do something about it.

Why, exactly? Are you under the impression that "the rest of the world" believes in forcibly changing the regimes of other sovereign countries? That cannot be the impression you got from the happenings of the last six months or so where pretty much every country vigorously opposed this doctrine, which seems to be purely American.

They have found I believe about 1.5 billion in good ole US currency hidden in palaces so far.

Somehow, I doubt that the US will give that money to France & Russia to pay back their debt. So what are you suggesting? That the French & Russians start digging in Iraq? :-)
