MM, The road to democracy. How many countries have had democracy imposed upon them successfully? I can think of Japan. Germany had already been a democracy. Hitler was elected chancellor.

"road to democracy" Well, the fallacy in the Bush team's argument is that everyone in the world actually wants democracy and Western values. Iraq is just one place in the world which is basically stuck somewhere in the 13th century, and will only evolve internally (external factors only minimal) over a long, long time. After all, we are talking about a part of the world in which woman basically have little/no rights- more than 1/2 the population. Where anyone with a majority will basically run roughshot over the rest of the population in everyway. Where, after more than a decade of freedom due to the US, Kuwaiti polled are 9-to-1 against the US (thanks a lot guys- a lot of gratitude there). We saved their country, and look at how they view us. Pretty foolish to expect Iraquis would be any more grateful for our efforts.

Since we've spent/are spending the $100B, we might as well spend another $500m and send back 50-100k Iraquis back to their country with money in the pocket, and hope they can effect change from within. I seriously doubt we can win the political, subversive battle that will occur for the many next years without some paid, loyal help (big numbers) on the inside (to help sway opinion)...We need 50k people marching for democracy in Iraq each week, and that's only going to happen if they are "our" 50k, and not paid off Iraquis (they don't march, they just take the money)

Newt and the hard right see the writing on the wall...already out trying to pin it all on Powell to save the 2004 election (goal: Take credit for "winning" the war, blame Powell for everything else). How Lee Atwater-ian...
