Gus was quoting an interpretation by an archaeologist of an ancient find to show that the historical Jewish communities were not that important and perhaps little "cow towns." I suspect that is a premise for some astute thinking which says that the Jews have no reason to be there. Part of his passage was that Jerusalem is not mentioned of importance in the Koran. I'll take his word for all of that. My point that this little strip of desert would have no value to anyone if it had not been used as a unifying force by the vast and powerful Arab nations to keep their people focused and them in power.
