It was quite obvious that waiting a few months would only have had the effect of giving Saddam more time to prepare, of costing us more lives lost in training, of waiting for very hot weather where wearing chemical suits would have been almost unbearable, of the need to cycle troops in and out of the theater becasue you can't have them waiting in the desert endlessly, and there was zero chance that Saddam would change anything that would have obviated the perceived need for the war.

It's fair to question whether the war should have been fought at all.

But if you accept the premise, either because you believe it or for the sake of argument without believing it, that the war was justified, there was no benefit and great cost in waiting.

The liberation of Iraq was an eminently worthwhile goal, and saved more Iraqis in the long run than were killed. There was no good reason to wait, when Saddam did not comply unless under threat by the United States, and the United States faced the summer heat and deteriorating morale if the matter dragged on. Almost all Iraqi scientists now talking to us agree that they lied their heads off, and that the programs we feared did exist, and that they were getting forewarning before inspections to move weapons caches or get rid of lab materials. It was time to put a stop to it........
