Ummm....

I don't remember Bush beating the war drums before 9/11/2001. Do you?

Things have changed. Sorry about that.

At this point, I wouldn't try to predict the outcome of the '04 election. You might as well flip a coin. If the economy is lousy and there is no serious foreign threat, Bush likely loses. If there is a serious threat, he probably wins. People consider being alive more important than getting a Cadillac.

HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION, and the general state of our ECONOMY.
Those 4 are not inextricably linked. ANy such assumption is foolhardy. HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION were nothing compared to now during FDR's term. The economy was good after '41, though- -because of a foreign war.

Johnson tried to inextricably link HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION and the general state of our ECONOMY. Didn't work very well at all. Out after one full term.

Fact is -- the vast majority of people, and somewhat selfishly/unfortunately (and most especially Americans) -- vote with their pocketbooks.
Yeah- -when they don't see serious foreign threats. When they do, it's shoot the bastages and we'll settle the account books later.

The days of deficit spending are no longer acceptable.
Again, that depends on circumstances.

It is strange that PREZ B. wants to run up the deficit even further. Maybe people will finally catch on that only the very rich are reaping the benefits of his policies. We could be looking at a $750 Billion deficit by 2006 with his bizarre thinking. I think people are catching on AND ARE GETTING "PO"ED. Why doesn't he propose a reduction or elimination on taxes on income that is used to pay FICA and a reduction of taxes on social security benefits if he wants to get $$$$ into the economy fast. His dividend tax elimination will be used for such important things as `$750 a day hotel suites, French luggage and perfume and the like. Money saved from what I propose will flow quickly back into the real working economy. In any case , I think some of the prior tax cut - the 2002 cut , that part which flowed to the very rich, should be rescinded.

His DNA apparently has him hard wired to ignore domestic issues like HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION, and the general state of our ECONOMY.

No, his DNA is wired to care about the economy via tax cuts. I don't believe they will work, but he does. He's a conservative Republican. And he will pass some sort of Medicare prescription drug plan. His DNA is also wired to care about healthcare and education by not having the Federal government mess with them too much. As I said, he's a conservative Republican. Just because Democrats believe deeply that it's the Federal Government's job to deal with such things, doesn't mean that the Republicans do!

You are so right Jack. But I'm sure in 2004, the Democratic candidate will expose Bush for who he really is. An emperor with NO CLOTHS.

I'm a big supporter of Bush's foreign policy - well, since 9/11/01 anyway.

If his domestic policies take us back to the era of massive budget deficits every year (which I would hate to see), he could be vulnerable on the issue.

I hope things don't develop this way as I don't see the Dem's having answers to anything.
