I find Christianity the most appealing, when it focusses on the actual words of Christ. If the message and practice of Christianity was nothing but the Sermon On the Mount, I would be a Christian. But most Christians, and Christian institutions, seem to guide their beliefs more by the Old Testament

This is the similar to what my father used to tell me. He believed early Christianity was the only religion worth its salt. He also thought there is too much undue emphasis on Old Testament.

One of these days when I have the time, I will research when, how, and why Old Testament was included in Bible and how did it come to be so influential. If anyone here knows the answer I'd appreciate the knowledge.

I very much like reading Richard Lattimore's translation of the gospels from the Greek. The language is modern, and the writing style very smooth. Also, it's not broken down into numbered paragraphs. He wasn't a Bible scholar, he just translated it as if it were any other text. He was well known for translating Homer and Greek plays.

We got the entire Lattimore New Testament in two books as it was originally published - Acts and Letters were in a second volume - it's all collected now into one book. They aren't nearly as interesting as the gospels.
