Ray, it seems they don't really care much when they have to change their story. It's pretty clear they think that might makes right, and that the public has a short attention span. When all else fails, cloak it behind the Ashcroft-Cheney veil of secrecy in the name of national security and executive privilege.

I wonder how much they believed that their role as the 'great savior' would make the post war control there a cakewalk, as if the Iraqi people would unconditionally welcome the 'liberators'.

I recall it being my first reaction back last fall when I got wind of these plans, that the generic Ahmed and Aqbar in Iraq wouldn't be too happy being told how to run their lives by a chap named Tommy Franks. Not to mention that if democratic elections were to be held, the likely outcome would be the invaders trying to figure out how to cancel the elections after the fundamentalist government elected by the people won hands down.

All you have to do is try to see things from someone else's point of view to come up with that one. I mean, can you imagine if even a moderate sheik and co. came in here, took over, and tried to dictate our lives while grabbing control of our resources ? After bombing us and then selling our resources to pay their companies to undertake the reconstruction ?

Unless the US intends to get brutal with the citizens there, for which I doubt our public has the stomach or the rest of the world has the tolerance, it's a gonna be a mess, I thinks. The great white father ain't quite as admired over there as he seems to imagine. Or, I could be all wrong, and the Iraqis will end up worshiping Jay Garner and the neo-con's fellow felon Chalabi, and all convert to become Baptists once they've been shown the light, mmm hmm.
