Should have nothing to do with it. Pay should be related to performance of the company. But typically management hires compensation consultant firms who make their money by spinning justifications for high compensation numbers. The joke is that the consultants can usually spin a rationale to pay execs in the 75 percentile, but in trying to pay all the execs in the 75 percentile it sets off a mathematical impossiblity marked by continual escalalating compensation.
