The invasion of Kuwait wasn't at all the way you report it. I seem to recall that the US approved Iraq's invasion by sending message to Hussein that they would NOT interfere. The reason for the invasion was because of slant drilling on the part of Kuwait. After the invasion, the US attacked with Gulf War I.

In retrospect, it seems that US was looking fo a pretext even back then to invade Iraq.

What you should also consider is that at the time the cold war came to an end. The trillions of dollars spent to defend ourselves against the Soviet threat were no longer necessary. We needed a new enemy to justify the military industry.
