I agree. The U.S. had to have known that Saddam had intentions to invade Kuwait. Like I said, I even figured that out myself, based upon Saddam's rhetoric in the late 1980s. Add to that the statements that our ambasador to Iraq April Gillespie told Saddam that we don't take sides in an arab arab dispute. How about our military satelites? Surely, they must have picked up Iraq's troop movements and amassing of troops on the border with Kuwait shortly before Saddam invaded. No doubt, the U.S. allowed Saddam to invade Kuwait as a pretext to permanently station troops in the oil rich Persain Gulf and also, as you astutely noted, as a justification to continue funding the military industrial complex after the end of Cold War was making people talk about a "peace dividend".

But, regardless of the U.S.'s underhanded intentions, Saddam was a fool for taking the bait and invading Kuwait. That one action bascially ruined his rule in Iraq. He no longer had the oil revenues to lavish on his people and it started a long downward spirl that ended with his ouster last month.

The reason for the invasion was because of slant drilling on the part of Kuwait.

Actually, it started out as accusations of overproduction by Kuwait and then it escalated to accusations of slant drilling.

do you have a source for the US approval for Iraq to invade Kuwait? Did we say we wouldn't interfere in their attempts to resolve their issues with Kuwait? or did we respond with approval to Iraq saying that they were going to invade Kuwait?
