Hi Jim:

re >>of these two old enemies taking on an admittedly anachronistic NATO<< I'd rather see it from a less antagonistic point of view, namely as a reaction to "put up or shut up" - the fact it took US to get things going in Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia) was sort of a wake-up call to realize the iron curtain is gone and that there's other defense issues that need attention. If there were (more or less condescending) calls for Europe "to take care of their own s*t", well, let's get our act together. Note that both French and German (and Dutch and ...) are in former YU and in Afganistan. It's rather straining for the German defense budget, but who said it would be a piece of cake to have peace under different conditions.

>>old enemies<< in the sense of >former<. I've seen enough graves in Europe (with US names too) to last my life time. A polyannish Rodney-Kingish sigh:"cant we all try to get along? Please?"

Re Voinovich - I saw him with Tim Russert. He was consistent through the whole barrage of questions and kept firing on all his cylinders without talking the prez bad. Did not have to - the add was good enough from this purpose.

>>Livia Drusilla<< dont knock her, she kept Augustus going; Read in Robert Graves on that subject.
